Current Research

Zhang from Zhejiang University of China and The University of Western Australia found that eating mushrooms or drinking green tea can help to prevent breast cancer. Zhang reported that breast Cancer was the most common type among women worldwide. Its rate is increasing in both developing and developed countries. Not surprisingly, cancer incidence in China was 4 to 5 times lower than that in developed countries. This was done to investigate if the Chinese traditional diet included fresh and dried mushrooms along with green leaf tea. Green tea, mushrooms extracts and mushroom extracts have anti-carcinogenic characteristics that were thought to improve breast cancer resistance.

A total of 2,000 women, ranging in age from 20 to 87, were monitored for their consumption of mushrooms, green tea, and other beverages. Half of the women in the study were healthy. The other half had confirmed breast carcinoma. The most commonly consumed mushrooms were fresh white button mushrooms, Agaricus Bisporus and fragrant dried mushrooms Lentinula Edodes. Some women had no preference for green tea or mushrooms while others preferred both.

The study concluded that combination of mushrooms and green-tea intake reduced breast cancer risk. Zhang concluded this cheap dietary intervention may offer potential protection against breast-cancer development if other research supports it.
